and i looked back over my shoulder,
waved a final good-bye,
and cried like a little schoolboy
who lost his box lunch on a field trip.

up the elevator we were just on,
past the automatic doors we'd been
through countless times,
i cried.

but there's something reassuring
about going through so much pain.
i know i must have loved
tremendously in the first place,
to have felt such sadness
upon farewell.

i just read this from a book i have... "Leaving something we love can leave us feeling adrift, torn from our moorings. Alone on the sea of life, we feel buffeted by the shifting winds. We've lost our rudder (our way), and we're not sure where we're headed." This poem reminded me of what you might be feeling, but it is a beautiful thing to love and feel from that love, as you said... :)
